The biggest human rights injustice no one is talking about...
There are an estimated 400 million disabled people living in the developing world (and possibly as many as 800 million).
If they all lived together in the same place, they would make up the third largest country on Earth after China and India. A country around the size of the European Union.
It would be the least educated country in the world; with the highest rate of infant mortality; limited access to health care and HIV/AIDS programmes; few employment opportunities; restricted access to democratic processes; and little hope of ever breaking the cycle of poverty.
Without doubt, it would be the poorest country in the world.
Despite being the biggest definable disadvantaged group of people in the world, disabled people are largely ‘invisible’, their human rights frequently and systematically ignored and abused. In situations of conflict, natural disaster or famine, they are literally invisible – as they are the last to receive help and the first to die.
The first step to a solution is knowledge...
As we have seen with other major development issues - such as HIV/AIDS - awareness leads to action.
400 million R aims to bring this 'invisible' human rights issue into the mainstream consciousness, through innovative and egaging films and creative communications projects which stimulate debate and catalyse action.
